Equipment Review – Adams Golf Super Hybrid XTD

Friday, April 27th, 2012

While it should come as a surprise to no one, my first golf club review is an Adams hybrid. Not just any hybrid – the Adams Super Hybrid XTD. Every once in a while, you come across a game changer. I will go on record and say that any player who is losing distance or wants to it it further WILL hit this club further than any hybrid they’ve ever hit in their life. Period. There is not another hybrid club on the marketplace that can compete with this club in terms of raw distance. In fact most fairway woods can’t compete either. Enough of the hype…

So I sit through a conference call where we discuss this new Super Hybrid XTD. It’s made out of Titanium. It has the patented Velocity slots on the crown and sole of the club. It’s a smidge longer than a traditional hybrid. It has the Mitsubishi Fubuki shaft as the stock shaft (this is a really high dollar hybrid shaft). It has the same Characteristic Time (CT) specs as a driver. HUH? A typical hybrid will be in the 65% range of a driver. A really hot face hybrid might be 70-72% of a driver. OK… I’m still with you. In my mind, I’m thinking Titanium (just like a driver), Fubuki shaft (just like the Fast 12 LS driver), Same CT as a driver – this thing is gonna be expensive. $299.99 retail they tell us. I say “No Way”. No way is anyone going to buy a $300 hybrid. I don’t care how far it goes, $300 is over the top. End of the discussion (call). I had my marching orders – time to go hit up the retailers.

I made a few stops and ended up at a Golf Galaxy store. I ask one of the guys to hit the 19* (this same guy hit the 15* Ti fast 11 FW Wood 308 last spring). 268. 5 times in a row. He says it’s 25 yards longer than his current 20* hybrid. He wants one. Over the next 2 weeks, I had several similar stories.

Fast forward 2 weeks… I head to Florida for the PGA Merchandise show. I make a quick detour to my Brothers house and we go play a few holes at his club. On a par 3 that is 220, I pull out my current 20* hybrid. Into the breeze, it lands on the front edge – about what I could expect. I grab another ball and the XTD. Solid contact. Hold the finish. Watch the ball go over the flag, over the green, and roll off the back edge. Had to be 25 yards longer. I LOVE this thing!! A couple holes later, I hit my 3 wood from 250. Front edge. Drop a ball, XTD to almost the same spot. Seriously?? It’s hard to look past all the distance. I knew that if I put this thing in my bag, it would be to replace my 3 wood, not my current 20* hybrid. I got all giddy thinking about taking the driver out and adding a 13* Super FW XTD. I was in love.

So I start doing demo days. As they say, the launch monitor doesn’t lie. I can mis-direct, though, so I take what it says with a grain of salt. Basically, they are so accurate that, unless you are fitting with the same ball as they player plays with, the data will be skewed. Not possible at demo days, so we go with what we have. I started conducting a “XTD hybrid challenge”. Take 5 shots with yours, 5 shots with mine, and 5 more shots with yours. We’ll compare the better 5 shot average against the 5 with mine. The average player was 25.8 yards longer. AVERAGE was 25.8 yards longer!! Out of the first 40 guys to do the test, I had 1 guy who hit 1 shot with his hybrid longer than the average of the 5 with the XTD. What I saw was that the slower the swing, the greater the improvement. Take a player who was 67 MPH with his hybrid. He hit it 118 yards. The XTD went 155 for him. 37 yards. He didn’t care what it cost. He came back out and asked me if we had any other clubs that could help him (he gained 35 yards with the Super FW XTD as well).

Is there a fault? Possibly. I found it with my own set. It just goes too far. There, I said it. If I replaced my current 20* hybrid with this one in a 19*, I’d have a 50 yard hole in my set. Better players who hit the ball a long ways may have to tinker to get the right loft to fit in their set. My Brother, for example, doesn’t carry a FW Wood. a 17* in one of these would be ideal for him. For the rest of us mortals, this is a must have.

So… despite the hefty price tag, this one really does deliver as promised. It’s stunning good looks and top quality components make this one to put on your “A” list.

ADAMS GOLF STAFF MEMBER YANI TSENG WINS WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN

Congratulations to Adams Golf Staff member Yani Tseng for winning the 2010 Women’s British Open! Leading wire-to-wire and taking the title with a one-stroke victory of 11-under par 277, the championship was the 21-year-old’s third Major title and second of the year to go along with her Kraft Nabisco trophy. It also makes her the youngest player ever to win three women’s Major titles.

Here’s what Yani played:

Speedline 9032LS driver (9.5 deg.)

Speedline FW (14 deg. 3 wood)

Idea a7 hybrid (19 deg.)

Idea a7 hybrid (22 deg.)

Idea Tech a4 irons (4-PW)

ADAMS GOLF STAFF MEMBER BERNHARD LANGER WINS U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

As if one Major championship was not enough, Adams Golf staff member Bernhard Langer didn’t let a change in continents or pesky jet lag get in his way of claiming his second victory in as many weeks at the U.S. Senior Open Championship. Carrying the same bag of Adams Golf products that he did at Carnoustie, Bernhard put together four rounds in the 60s for the first time in his Champions Tour career to finish at 8-under for the tournament, clinching a three-shot victory. By claiming his fourth trophy of the year, Bernhard vaulted into first place on the Champions Tour money list and extended his lead in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race.

In capturing his win, Bernhard played the Speedline driver (9.5 deg.), Insight fairway wood (12.5 deg.), Idea Pro hybrid (18 deg.) and Idea Pro Black irons (6-PW).

Adams Golf also won the hybrid count at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, marking the 128th straight victory for our team!

WINNER OF GREENBRIER CLASSIC CARRIES IDEA PRO GOLD HYBRID

The winning ways continued for Adams Golf this weekend as an Idea hybrid was in the bag of the champion on the PGA Tour as well. The winner of The Greenbrier Classic carried an Idea Pro Gold hybrid (18 deg.) en route shooting a magical 59 in the final round and securing his victory. Just as important, Adams Golf continued its position as the number one hybrid on Tour by winning the hybrid count for the 26th time on the PGA Tour this year.

IN OTHER NEWS

It was not just the Yani and Bernhard show this weekend. Other members of the Adams Golf team had strong finishes as well: Tom Watson placed 5th and Tommy Armour III ended up 11th at the U.S. Senior Open Championship; Brittany Lincicome finished T9 at the Women’s British Open.
Speedline drivers have claimed 16 victories since their introduction on tour in late 2008.
With the additions of this week’s victories, Idea hybrids have now notched 20 wins in 2010.

Adams Golf Showcases Fourth Generation Aerodynamic Technology in New Speedline 9064LS and 4G Ultra-Lite Drivers Groundbreaking Distance Fitting Systems Also Unveiled

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

PLANO, TEXAS, July 28, 2010 – Going farther than ever before, Adams Golf (NasdaqCM:ADGF) announces their newest groundbreaking lineup of products: Speedline 9064LS and 4G Ultra-Lite drivers. As the fourth generation of aerodynamic technology, both drivers are the longest yet–designed to create less drag and airflow turbulence, thereby increasing club head speed and distance for golfers of all types.

Speedline 9064LS Drivers
The patent-pending aerodynamic shaping of the next-generation Speedline 9064LS driver creates less drag and airflow turbulence during the swing, resulting in faster club head speed and up to 15 yards more distance. Design improvements to the 9064LS include improved aerodynamics, a deeper face and increased MOI for more forgiveness. The new features optimize launch conditions with 15 percent lower spin off the club face, thereby generating even more distance. Coinciding with the launch of the 9064LS driver, the new Aldila RIP graphite shafts–Alpha for lower ball flight and Gamma for higher ball flight–will make their first appearance in the retail market with the Adams Golf Speedline 9064 series.
“As the first company to bring aerodynamic technology to market, we constantly challenge our engineers to refine their groundbreaking designs to give consumers more and more distance,” said Chip Brewer, President and CEO of Adams Golf. “I am proud to say that they have definitely delivered with the 9064LS driver. The distances gained with the reduced drag on the Speedline club head will allow golfers of all levels to take their games to the next level.”
Speedline drivers have collected 14 professional wins since their introduction and the 9064LS model is already in the bags of several tour players, including Adams Golf staff members Tom Watson, Paul Azinger and Tommy Armour III.
The Speedline 9064LS driver will ship to golf shops beginning August 10 and will offer either the Aldila RIP Alpha or the Aldila RIP Gamma graphite shafts. The suggested retail price (SRP) for the Speedline 9064LS drivers is $479.99.

Available lofts and flexes are as follows:
Right-Hand ~ Gamma shaft ~ 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 (regular and stiff flexes)
Right-Hand ~ Alpha shaft ~ 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 (stiff and x-stiff flexes)
Left-Hand ~ Alpha and Gamma shafts ~ 9.5 (regular, stiff and x-stiff flexes)

Speedline 4G Ultra-Lite Drivers
Providing maximum distance for players who benefit from lightweight materials in their clubs, the industry-leading Speedline 4G Ultra-Lite drivers are the first to combine refined weighting in their construction with true aerodynamic technology to deliver increased yardages off the tee.
Weighing in at only 282 total grams, the exceptional design features of the Speedline 4G Ultra-Lite drivers have resulted in the lightest but longest-hitting driver available to those whose swing speeds gain more distance with a lighter overall club weight. Maximum forgiveness on off-center hits come from a mid-spin and mid-launch off the face. Just as in the entire Speedline series of drivers, an aero-shaped crown creates less drag and less airflow turbulence for increased club head speed. Thus, the 4G Ultra-Lite driver is the first in the industry to combine the proven benefits of aerodynamic shaping with lightweight club construction.
Also critical to the Speedline 4G Ultra-Lite’s performance is its 44-gram super premium Mitsubishi Bassara shaft which also helps generate more ball speed to promote more distance.
The Speedline 4G Ultra-Lite is available in two lofts (10 degree and 12 degree) in regular flex. It will begin shipping to golf shops nationwide on August 15 with a SRP of $479.99.

Speedline 9064LS Distance Fitting System
For the first time in the industry, a distance fitting system (DFS) version of the Speedline 9064LS is also available that allows the consumer to adjust for not only face angle and loft but also for club length. With the DFS, the head and shaft length on this special version of the 9064LS is adjustable and the consumer receives a kit with all the tools they need to optimize their driver to meet the demands of different conditions and specific swings.

All DFS versions of the Speedline 9064LS come at a standard length of 45.5 inches and D3 swing weight. However, with the DFS kit, the length, loft and face angle can be adjusted using the specially designed removable spacers and weight inserts. Each DFS kit includes a torque wrench, additional spacers and additional weights—all of which fit into a conveniently designed zippered case. Ultimately the consumer has shaft length options between 45 and 46 inches and loft/face angle options of one degree either way.

“Shaft length may be the most dramatic factor in determining distance,” said Tim Reed, Vice President of Research and Development for Adams Golf. “As the first company in the industry to engineer a changeable system not only for loft and lie but also shaft length, we feel we are finally giving consumers the option to truly optimize their drivers for increased distance off the tee. With the advent of this technology, if you are not fitting your driver for shaft length, you’re not fitting properly.”

The DFS version of the Speedline 9064LS driver will ship to golf shops beginning August 10 and will offer either the Aldila RIP Alpha or the Aldila RIP Gamma graphite shafts. The suggested retail price (SRP) for the DFS version of the Speedline 9032LS driver is $479.99.

Additional information on the technology behind the entire lineup of Speedline products can be found at www.adamsgolf.com.

Marathon Sports Agency and Adams Golf Form Partnership in Upstate New York

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Continuing with it’s long tradition of working with the finest companies in the industries that it represents, the Marathon Sports Agency has come to terms with Adams Golf.

AdamsGolf_Logo

The Marathon Sports Agency has worked in the Golf Industry for over 10 years, and has found a great deal of success in that arena. Given the chance to improve it’s current line up in the Golf Industry, the decision was easy. The deal was quick to surface, and creates a partnership that is sure to be strong for years to come. The territory to be covered is the same as it has been for the last 10 years, so there is a solid account base already in place. The Marathon Sports Agency typically looks for companies who are “Techie and Cool”, and those who have a story to tell. Adams Golf is no exception.

Adams Golf is a leader in the golf industry, dating back to its inception in 1987. In the late 1990′s, they released the Tight Lies Fairway Wood, which revolutionized a very stagnant Fairway Wood market. This introduction essentially put the company on the map. They continued this dominance, and pioneered other areas of Golf club design throughout the past 10 years. Most recently, they have dominated the new “Hybrid golf club” market. Being the #1 Hybrid played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour in 2009 has added a great deal of credibility to this small powerhouse company based outside of Dallas, TX. They boast 46% of all Hybrids played on these 3 tours combined are Adams hybrids, with the next closest competitor only having 21%. They have won the hybrid count at every Champions Tour event since the start of the 2005 season and every Nationwide Tour event since the start of the 2006 season. Talk about dominance!!!

Not Surprisingly, they are also the proud manufacturer of the #1 Hybrid Iron sets in golf. They have been producing Iron sets with Hybrids in them since the 2003 season. Along with that, they are the #1 manufacturer of Ladies clubs in golf with over 25% market share.

They are no stranger to the Driver and Fairway wood market either. The recently introduced Speedline Fast 10 Driver was Golf Digest Hot List Gold medal winner, and a 3rd generation model that’s taken the principles of aerodynamic engineering to the limits. It is one of the longest drivers in golf, but it doesn’t accomplish this at the expense of Appearance, Feel or affordability. Truly a statement to the design engineers at Adams Golf.

In addition to the World Class line at Adams Golf, the Marathon Sports Agency has agreed to represent the Square 2, Lady Fairway and Keri Golf Brands as well. All three of these brands fall under the Adams Golf umbrella. This Partnership will officially commence on January 1, 2010.
